It's in good overall condition but does show wear to the covers and the title on the front page is printed slightly canted (see pictures). Sailors from pay-grades E-1 to E-3 that have no rates, are considered to be in apprenticeships or training for a rating, thus the slang term "undes" (Pronounced UN-DEZ) (un-designated) when referring to them as a group. This book is a basic guide to the Navy written as a training guide for Non Rated Sailors. One feature of the Navy’s war in both Europe-Africa and the Pacific is the extensive use of training course manuals among its enlisted personnel. Especially during the last three years of the war, the enlisted personnel of the Navy, equal in size to the population of Philadelphia, showed a tremendous upsurge of interest in the books covering the subjects which they needed to learn to perform their specialized duties. Twice as many manuals were distributed in 1944 as in 1943, and the number for 1945 pushed the three-million mark. Some recruits went to service schools for a short period of intensive training, but most of them, after reporting aboard ship, had to learn by doing the jobs that were assigned to them—and in a hurry. How long it takes to study a manual depends entirely upon the reader and not at all on progress tests, as was the custom in the old training courses, for it is essentially a self-study book.
